US Trade Representative Robert Wright Heze said on the 1st that the US and Japan will discuss high tariffs on Japanese and Japanese steel products in the bilateral trade agreement negotiations.

US President Donald Trump seeks to sign a bilateral trade agreement with Japan. Letter Heater was eager to attend a business forum in Washington on the 1st: "We must sign a free trade agreement with Japan, and we hope to sign this agreement at some point."

When Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited the United States in mid-April, he agreed with Trump to start a new round of consultations on the Japan-US bilateral trade agreement, led by Japan’s economic regeneration minister Mao Mumin and US trade representative Robert Wright Heze. The two sides are expected to hold the first round of ministerial-level consultations on Japan-US trade and investment in mid-June.

During Abe’s visit to the United States, he urged Trump to exempt the steel from high tariffs on steel and aluminum products. However, Trump “bundled” the exemption tariffs with the results of bilateral trade negotiations and refused to exempt Japan at this stage. Wright Heze said on the 1st that after the start of a new round of bilateral trade negotiations, the two governments will discuss the issue of exempting Japan from high tariffs on steel and aluminum products.

Wright Heze said that the Trump administration "actively considers" developing bilateral trade agreements with countries in the Asia-Pacific region. According to Japan’s Kyodo News, the Abe government has been “stubborn” on the Japan-US bilateral trade agreement and insists that the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) is the best choice for both countries.

After taking office in January last year, Trump announced the multilateral free trade agreement that the United States negotiated when it withdrew from the Democratic Party. The 11 other TPP countries, including Japan, Australia, and Canada, spent several months renegotiating. In March this year, they signed the “No US TPP”, the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (CPTPP).

When Abe visited the United States, he once again suggested that the United States should change its mind. However, US Secretary of Commerce Wilber Ross recently said that TPP is "defective" when he was invited to the US Consumer News and Business Channel program, denying that the United States will return to the TPP in the near future.
